Hi, this is Anita from the Dusty Roads
0:09
podcast. Today I want to talk a little
0:11
bit about why is travel important and in
0:13
particular why is travel important for
0:16
personal growth or why do I believe
0:18
travel is important for personal growth.
0:21
You know, things like, you know, food
0:23
and a language you don't speak, figuring
0:25
out how to read a bus schedule, or
0:27
staring out a view so beautiful. It
0:29
silences your mind. You know, travel
0:32
isn't just about ticking places off a
0:34
bucket list. I'm surprised that, you
0:35
know, today's world of social media and
0:37
all of this, you see so many people that
0:39
they just travel just to get that
0:41
picture of them traveling and then they
0:45
say, "Wow, you know, I've been here."
0:47
And they don't really immerse themselves
0:49
in the culture. I'm kind of a little bit
0:50
of a different traveler. I'm the kind of
0:53
person that, you know, would go to
0:54
China, visit a temple, and I could sit
0:57
at the temple there for an hour or two,
0:59
talking to people, immersing myself in
1:02
the culture of the temple, and just
1:04
watching everything, observing things,
1:06
and just enjoying life as it goes on.
1:09
That's kind of me as a traveler. I don't
1:11
necessarily have to see all the tourist
1:13
spots, so it's great to see. But what I
1:15
really like to see is the local culture,
1:18
local people, and the local life.
1:21
So, I want to talk a little bit about 10
1:23
ways that travel can change you. And,
1:26
you know, having traveled a lot, you
1:28
know, in my life and been to many
1:30
places, you know, travel is not the
1:32
same, of course, for everyone. There's
1:34
those people that travel and they have a
1:36
schedule. They need to see every single
1:38
thing. And there's those people that are
1:39
more like me who are maybe a little bit
1:41
like they want to immerse themselves in
1:43
the culture. They want to see the local
1:44
life. They want to see local things.
1:46
There is no right or wrong. Whatever
1:48
fits for you is the right thing. But
1:51
here are some reasons why how travel can
1:54
change you or you know how travel
1:56
changes me, how travel can change
1:57
anyone. First of all, number one, it
1:59
shakes you out of your routine. You
2:01
know, most people live their lives in
2:03
autopilot. You wake up,
2:05
you commute, you work, you sleep, you
2:08
repeat. Travel can break that up, that
2:11
loop. Suddenly your senses are awake
2:13
again and you're noticing, question,
2:15
adjusting. It rewires how you look at
2:20
Travel teaches you patience.
2:22
This is true. You know, if you're
2:24
suddenly and your plane's delayed or
2:27
something else happens and you're
2:28
traveling and a road floods and you
2:30
can't get through the flood, you know,
2:33
or you don't quite understand what's
2:34
going on. Travel can really teach you,
2:37
you know, you know, patience, you know,
2:39
whatever it is that happens can teach
2:41
you that you can learn from it. Travel
2:44
throws you curveballs in life
2:45
constantly, you know. So, you can either
2:48
fight them or you can just kind of go
2:50
back and say, "Hey, we're going to kind
2:52
of live with this." Travel can build
2:54
your confidence. There's nothing like
2:56
navigating a foreign country, figuring
2:58
out things on your own and realizing, "I
3:01
can handle this. I can do this. I can
3:04
make it through this." Travel confronts
3:06
your fears. You know, sometimes travel
3:09
makes you face things you don't know you
3:10
feared, like getting lost. being alone,
3:14
being vulnerable. I remember when I
3:16
backpacked China on my own, one of my
3:18
greatest fears was being alone. And then
3:21
as I started traveling and meeting
3:24
people along the way, meeting new
3:25
friends, some of them who I I'm still
3:28
friends with today after all these many,
3:30
many years ago, it really changes you.
3:32
It builds your confidence. You get to
3:34
know new people. When you're traveling
3:36
with somebody and you're just there with
3:38
them in a group, it's sometimes it's
3:39
really hard to get to know other people
3:41
unless you really go out of your way and
3:42
start talking to people, you really
3:44
don't get to know other people except
3:46
for those people you're traveling with.
3:48
So, you know, travel can build your
3:49
confidence, especially if you decide to
3:51
travel alone. It can confront your
3:53
fears. Builds your confidence. It
3:55
confronts your fears too at the same
3:57
time. Travel deepens empathy. You know,
4:00
when you spend time in someone else's
4:02
country, you begin to understand life
4:04
from their side. You encounter different
4:07
values, struggles, and joys. It broadens
4:10
your heart. Travel humbles you. I know
4:14
travel's really humbled me. You're not
4:17
the center of the world. Travel reminds
4:19
you that you see how big the world is,
4:22
how vast the world is, how people live
4:25
very differently. It helps you to
4:26
understand them where maybe before you
4:29
didn't understand them at all. That kind
4:30
of humility can be very healthy in life.
4:33
It can clarify for you what matters,
4:35
what matters most, what is most
4:37
important for you in life. When you're
4:39
out of your environment, you seeing what
4:41
you miss and what you don't. Travel can
4:45
help you filter out the noise. Maybe you
4:47
discover that, hey, you know what? I
4:49
don't need all these things in my life.
4:51
I can live with what's just in my
4:53
backpack. I can live off of that. I
4:55
don't need to have a closet full of
4:56
clothes. Travel can change in that way.
4:58
It can clarify for you. This is what
5:00
really matters is importance. It can
5:02
awaken your curiosity. It can spark
5:04
questions. You know, what's that dish
5:06
called? Why do you eat this? You know,
5:08
why do you do things this way? It can
5:10
help you to be able to learn new things.
5:11
And the world we're living in today, we
5:14
need to constantly be learning. It can
5:16
inspire creativity, new places, new
5:19
colors, new ideas. Travel can stir up
5:22
the brain. You know, writers can write
5:24
more. artist sketch. Entrepreneurs think
5:26
differently. You know, you you come back
5:28
with a creativity recharged. You come
5:34
One of the great things about travel is
5:35
that travel can connect you to humanity.
5:38
You learn that people are more alike
5:40
than different. And this is something
5:41
that I really love about travel is that,
5:44
you know, when you go to other countries
5:46
that you're going to a new culture, you
5:48
begin to realize that this person may
5:50
not look like me. They may not even
5:53
speak my language, but we still have
5:55
something in common. We have our
5:57
humanity in common. You know, whether
5:59
you're sharing a meal in Morocco or
6:01
getting directions in Japan or whether
6:04
you're, you know, in a um a gear or in
6:09
you know, you learn there's a shared
6:10
language of kindness and connection that
6:13
overrides culture. That, you know,
6:15
kindness and humanity are the things
6:17
that overrides any type of culture at
6:20
all. But the truth is, you know, and
6:22
this is this is really true, is that,
6:24
you know, travel is not always easy. It
6:27
can be frustrating. It isn't all about
6:29
sunsets and gelato. You know, sometimes,
6:32
you know, it's miss buses. It could be
6:34
food poisoning, language struggles,
6:37
Wi-Fi dead zones. All these things can
6:40
happen while you travel. But it's also
6:42
through the bad things that you can
6:44
learn stuff, too. You find out what
6:47
you're made of when plans fall apart. Do
6:49
you throw a fit? Are you angry? Are you
6:52
upset? Or do you kind of go with the
6:54
flow and you just show, hey, I can
6:56
adapt. I'm gonna I'll do something else
6:59
this day or I'll learn to adapt in some
7:01
way if things didn't go as planned.
7:04
That's why I feel like travel is worth
7:06
it every single time because there's so
7:09
much you gain from travel, so much you
7:11
learn from travel. You know, go
7:14
somewhere even if it confuses you. Go
7:17
somewhere that calms you. Go somewhere
7:20
that makes you rethink what normal looks
7:22
like. Go somewhere which helps you be
7:24
able to understand and see the world
7:27
from a different point of view. You
7:30
know, even short trips can help impact
7:32
your personal growth. It doesn't have to
7:34
be long trips. It can be absolutely be
7:36
shorter trips. But, you know, find a way
7:39
to get out of your comfort zone and to
7:41
see this beautiful and wonderful world
7:43
that we live in and to explore this
7:46
world that we live in. That's what it's
7:48
all about with our Dusty Roads podcast
7:50
and a bus on a dusty road. That's why we
7:53
believe in living your life as a global
7:55
citizen. That's what it means to live
7:57
your life as a global citizen. to just
7:59
be aware of the world, think about the
8:01
world, have compassion for other people
8:03
in the world, and understand that
8:05
there's a world out there that is
8:06
different than the world that you may
8:08
see within your own little community. So
8:11
get out there, explore it, and see that
8:13
world. And if you can't get out and
8:15
explore it and see the world, then come
8:16
and join with us and see it together
8:18
with us because together we can see and
8:20
explore these things and begin to
8:22
understand things about the world that
8:24
we did not understand before. That's
8:27
what this is all about. Thank you so
8:30
much for being part of this community.
