hi this is Anita from the Dusty Roads
0:10
podcast you know as part of the our blog
0:13
A Bus on a Dusty Road and the Dusty
0:15
Roads podcast one of the things we say
0:17
is about living your life as a global
0:20
citizen so today I want to talk a little
0:22
bit about what does it mean to be a
0:24
global citizen what exactly is when we
0:28
say live your life as a global citizen
0:30
what does it mean well at its core
0:32
global citizenship refers to the
0:34
awareness of the interconnectiveness of
0:37
all people and the responsibility to
0:39
contribute positively to the cultural
0:42
community you know all of us are we're
0:45
we have a national citizenship i happen
0:47
to be American you know which is based
0:50
upon that's our legal status that's my
0:52
legal status is I hold a US passport but
0:55
to be a global citizen means that you
0:58
believe that you are you know more or
1:00
less a citizen of the world which is
1:02
very much what I believe because I have
1:04
lived overseas for almost all my adult
1:07
life in fact all my adult life I've
1:09
lived overseas so I very much consider
1:12
myself a global citizen a citizen of the
1:15
world i have friends from all over the
1:18
world global citizen recognizes that
1:20
that the world's challenges climate
1:22
change uh poverty social injustice and
1:27
political instability require collective
1:29
solutions so you know as a global
1:31
citizen you're not only you know believe
1:34
you know in the world but you're also an
1:35
advocate for human rights you believe in
1:40
um you know engaging in global issues
1:42
and you seek to bridge the cultural
1:44
divides through understanding and
1:46
cooperation and I think that's really
1:48
the key there is that as a global
1:50
citizen you're seeking to find a way how
1:54
can we have more understanding how can
1:56
we have more cooperation how can we as a
1:59
world begin to understand each other
2:01
more you might ask yourself well why
2:04
does global citizenship matter in
2:06
today's world and as I look at what's
2:08
happening in the world today and I look
2:10
at you know especially in my own country
2:12
of America and many of the things which
2:14
are happening there which I personally
2:17
find extremely disturbing of what's
2:19
happening there but I believe that there
2:21
are some reasons why we need to all
2:24
strive to be a global citizen first of
2:27
all we have interconnected economies and
2:29
societies whether we want to believe it
2:31
or not the world is flat it was Thomas
2:35
Freriedman who wrote that book called
2:36
the world is flat many years ago and
2:38
basically told how the internet would
2:40
make the world flat and it's true you
2:43
know now you can have friends from all
2:44
over the world used to be before the
2:47
internet where you didn't really you
2:48
know have friends from you had friends
2:50
from your own little community your own
2:52
little life that you had around you
2:54
those are kind of the people you know
2:55
maybe people who came in to visit other
2:57
people but now today you can have
2:59
friends and know people from all over
3:01
the world the world is interconnected
3:04
And as a world we have global challenges
3:08
for example one of the challenges we
3:10
have is is of course climate change
3:13
whether you believe or you don't believe
3:15
in climate change you can see that the
3:17
climate is changing around the world i
3:19
myself grew up in Wisconsin and I
3:22
remember when I was young and we I would
3:24
go to school and it was cold all winter
3:26
from October until April we had snow on
3:29
the ground it was just the way that it
3:31
is now today many times in December and
3:35
um you know parts of January February
3:38
the snow will melt or suddenly one day
3:40
will be 70 degrees and the next day will
3:43
be you know it could be cold or we'll
3:45
have extreme cold weather followed by
3:49
hotter unseasonally hot weather that is
3:51
the whole effect of all the you know
3:53
global ch changes I believe with global
3:56
warming you know so you know as a as a
3:59
world we have these global challenges
4:01
it's kind of like what I heard heard
4:03
recently on a US news station they were
4:05
talking about you know some of the
4:06
diseases going on the world and they
4:08
said how disease knows no border i think
4:11
we all saw that with co 19 you know with
4:14
the corona virus we saw how it didn't
4:16
really know a border and how it you know
4:18
affected you know throughout the world
4:20
infected all the borders that you know
4:21
pandemics you humanitarian crisises
4:25
climate change are all things that uh
4:27
basically they don't know any borders
4:29
they are global challenges as a global
4:32
citizen we can basically help to foster
4:35
cross-cultural understanding we can try
4:38
to embrace diversity engage engage and
4:41
learn other perspectives we can try to
4:43
contribute to try to make the world a
4:45
more peaceful place by promoting
4:47
inclusivity and mutual respect we can be
4:50
expanding personal and professional
4:53
opportunities they can enjoy careers and
4:55
educational advantages in a world that
4:57
values cross-cultural competencies you
5:00
know companies and organizations
5:01
increasingly are seeking individuals or
5:04
people who can basically be able to
5:06
navigate diverse environments speak
5:08
multiple languages and work effectively
5:11
in international teams now I want to
5:14
point this out because I've been over
5:15
here long enough to realize that not
5:17
everyone can do this i've seen many
5:19
people come and you know live overseas
5:22
and they just couldn't handle it or I've
5:24
seen in many cases where the husband
5:27
handled it thrived was doing really well
5:30
the wife could not handle it in fact the
5:32
wife was so scared and worried she just
5:35
sat home all day and would do absolutely
5:37
nothing completely froze in
5:39
international setting there are many
5:41
benefits of being a global citizen and I
5:43
just want to talk about some of them one
5:45
would be there's an enhanced cultural
5:47
awareness and empathy you know as a
5:49
global citizen you become more culture
5:51
aware become more empathetic you maybe
5:54
begin to enjoy and understand other
5:56
cultures and you you you um see yourself
6:00
as a global citizen that you want to be
6:02
able to develop a deeper understanding
6:05
of humanity's shared experiences you can
6:08
have a broader educational and careers
6:09
pro prospects as we mentioned before
6:11
like you know companies might be looking
6:14
for somebody who has some international
6:15
perspective someone who can work on
6:18
cross-cultural teams someone who can
6:21
understand other teams greater social
6:23
and political engagement being a global
6:25
citizen encourages active participation
6:29
in social and political issues whether
6:31
through voting advocacy volunteerism
6:35
global citizens can help shape policies
6:37
that address pressing global concerns a
6:40
global citizen be personal growth and
6:42
self-discovery travel learning new
6:45
languages engaging with diverse
6:47
communities can lead to a personal
6:49
transformation you know you can go to
6:51
other countries and you don't come out
6:53
the same that's what I've always said
6:55
you can engage with people from other
6:57
cultures and learn something new that
6:59
could change your life or you know
7:01
change your perspective on things that
7:03
you once saw and realize that maybe it's
7:06
not exactly the way I saw it it may
7:08
actually be more this way being a global
7:10
citizen can enhance your personal and
7:12
professional growth and relationships so
7:15
how do you become a global citizen what
7:17
are some things that you can do well
7:19
first of all you can educate yourself on
7:20
global issues you know this is very
7:23
important learn about global issues
7:24
learn about the history uh the culture
7:27
of a of a country society i'm a very big
7:30
person on history i believe that we can
7:31
learn a lot from history learn a new
7:34
language or try to learn words of a new
7:36
language learning a second or third
7:39
language can improve not only your
7:40
cognitive abilities but they can also
7:43
help you with cross-cultural
7:47
appreciation travel with a purpose if
7:49
you're going to go out and travel don't
7:51
just say "I'm just going to go lie on
7:53
the beach." each maybe travel with a
7:54
purpose travel with an open mind um
7:56
travel you know in a study abroad
7:58
program a cultural exchange or
8:00
volunteerism maybe this can help build a
8:03
connection and a deeper understanding of
8:05
the world engage in cross-cultural
8:08
experiences you know even if
8:10
international travel is not an option
8:12
you can still learn about other
8:14
countries and cultures and people and
8:16
you can benefit from that you know one
8:18
of one of my favorite magazines has
8:20
always been the National Geographics you
8:21
can learn so much about the world there
8:23
and about other people places and
8:26
cultures support global causes you know
8:29
contribute to international charities uh
8:32
support uh fair trade advocate for human
8:35
rights can be a meaningful way to become
8:38
a global citizen and this is even if you
8:40
don't even leave your couch or your own
8:43
home that you can still support global
8:46
causes and be an advocate for this
8:48
global world that we live in leverage
8:50
digital connectivity for good you know
8:53
be on social media digital platforms um
8:57
you know share ideas raise awareness
8:59
collaborate on global issues you know
9:02
use technology responsibly to educate to
9:06
inspire to empower um for change so you
9:10
know being a global citizen is more than
9:12
just a concept it's a mindset it and it
9:15
doesn't really matter whether you travel
9:16
or you don't travel i've said this many
9:18
many times that being a global citizen
9:21
doesn't mean that you necessally have to
9:22
travel being a global citizen means that
9:24
essentially that you are saying I care I
9:28
care about people of the world i want to
9:30
get to know people that are different
9:32
than me i want to be a bridge and not a
9:35
wall and I've talked about this many
9:37
times of being a bridge that being a
9:39
cultural bridge and not putting up a
9:42
cultural wall instead saying "I want to
9:44
get to know people from other cultures
9:46
and to be able to understand them
9:48
better." If you'd like to be able to
9:50
learn more about what it means to be a
9:52
global citizen I've written a blog post
9:55
entitled "What does it mean to be a
9:57
global citizen definition and benefits."

We'll put a link in the description so
10:02
