The Cambodian Khmer Krama Scarf is more than just a scarf. It has many uses including a scarf, bandanna, baby carriage, towel, covering of the face to protect the face against wind and dust storms.
During the brutal Khmer Rouge era of Cambodian politics, many of the Khmer Rouge fighters wore red and white checked Krama scarves. Today some Cambodians may refuse to wear a red and white gingham Krama scarf because of the legacy of the red and white Krama scarves and the Khmer Rouge era of Cambodian politics.
The Cambodian krama scarf is a symbol of the strength, survival, and courage of the Cambodian people.
