0:08
hi this is Anita from the Dusty Roads
0:11
podcast today I want to talk a little
0:13
bit about what does it mean to be a
0:14
global citizen or what does it mean to
0:17
be a global citizen in today's world our
0:19
Dusty Roads podcast and at my blog A Bus
0:22
on a Dusty Road we explore this a lot we
0:25
talk about and encourage people to live
0:27
your life as a global citizen first of
0:29
all let's talk about what is a global
0:31
citizen a global citizen is someone who
0:34
sees beyond their national identity and
0:37
embraces the shared responsibilities we
0:40
all have as humans it's not about where
0:43
you're born or live it's about how you
0:45
think how you act and what values guide
0:48
you global citizens care about human
0:52
sustainability equity education and
0:55
access they stay informed they travel
0:58
when they can they ask questions they
1:01
connect dots between cultures they
1:03
listen they show up and they don't
1:06
pretend the world's problems belong to
1:08
someone else so why being a global
1:11
citizen why does it matter today well
1:13
we're more connected than ever you know
1:16
through technology trade climate culture
1:19
and crisis but connection doesn't
1:22
guarantee compassion or action that's
1:25
where global citizenship comes in it's a
1:28
mindset that turns awareness into
1:31
responsibility today I want to talk
1:33
about 15 key areas about why being a
1:38
matters and here are the 15 areas one
1:42
you understand we're all interconnected
1:46
you know the world is more
1:47
interconnected now than I think it's
1:48
ever been at any time and this
1:51
interconnection will just continue to
1:53
grow and grow as technology continues to
1:56
grow we as a world are truly
1:58
interconnected in so many ways
2:02
you can have friends in one part of the
2:04
world and stay connected with them you
2:07
know through whether it's through
2:09
Facebook or it's through you know
2:13
FaceTime or any types of WhatsApp any
2:17
other types of mediums you can be able
2:18
to stay connected with your friends and
2:21
family many years ago when I moved to
2:24
Asia it was kind of a bit lonely i
2:25
didn't hear from people much you know we
2:28
didn't have the technology we have today
2:29
it was very expensive to call but today
2:32
I'm able to call home every single day
2:35
and I'm able to connect every single day
2:38
with people around the world it really
2:40
truly is a more interconnected and
2:42
different world than it's ever been
2:44
before as a global citizen you respect
2:47
cultures without making them seem
2:49
romantic or stereotyping them you learn
2:52
from others not to collect their
2:53
traditions but to honor them so you know
2:56
you have culture appreciation not
2:58
appropriation and those are you know two
3:00
very different things you appreciate the
3:02
culture and the different nuances of
3:04
another type of country you stay
3:07
informed about global issues as a global
3:09
citizen you're someone who cares about
3:10
the world so you stay informed about
3:13
what are the issues happening in the
3:15
world you do other things like you
3:17
support fair trade and ethical
3:19
consumption you make buying choices that
3:22
don't exploit workers or the environment
3:24
you care where you know your coffee
3:27
clothes or tech comes from you care
3:28
about these things you understand them
3:31
you practice environmental
3:32
responsibility this I think is really a
3:34
big one that the world needs more you
3:37
know doing things like recycling
3:38
reducing plastics and minimizing your
3:40
carbon footprints are all they aren't
3:43
just local concerns they should be
3:44
global commitments language is powerful
3:48
you may speak more than one language you
3:50
may try to learn a few words when you
3:51
travel it's not just about convenience
3:54
it's also about respect language can be
3:56
a great way to be able to bring cultures
3:59
and countries and people together you
4:02
embrace differences without trying to
4:04
erase them you understand the world is
4:05
filled with differences and you you try
4:07
to embrace these differences and
4:09
appreciate these differences you travel
4:12
with curiosity and humility you know I
4:15
think really think humility is a great
4:17
thing you know so many people they they
4:18
they travel and they feel like "Oh I
4:20
know it all." Or they compare it to
4:22
their home well in my home we do this in
4:25
my country we do this that's not what
4:27
travel's about travel is about having
4:30
humility it's about learning from others
4:32
it's about gaining from others it's
4:34
about being able to see the differences
4:37
in others and appreciate the differences
4:39
in others you support local education
4:43
you believe everyone should have access
4:44
to learning whether it's a girl in
4:46
Afghanistan or a rural student in
4:47
Guatemala you believe in education for
4:50
all and when you have the opportunity to
4:51
travel maybe you educate somebody about
4:53
your country about your culture about
4:55
your life you vote and you influence
4:58
policy and the world with the world in
5:00
mind you know when you vote if you're in
5:02
a country that allows you to vote you
5:04
vote thinking about the world and about
5:07
how this will impact the world how your
5:10
vote will impact the world you advocate
5:13
for human rights you stand up for
5:15
freedom of speech gender equality LGBTQ
5:19
and rights and racial justice and
5:23
protection regardless of where the
5:25
issues originate you share
5:28
knowledge not just opinions i think this
5:31
is also a really important one that you
5:33
know you contribute to the conversation
5:36
projects the community you you become
5:38
part of the solution not the problem
5:41
where you can you offer help and
5:43
mentorship and collaboration across
5:46
borders you fight against nationalism
5:48
and extremism and this is a problem
5:50
which is happening more and more
5:52
throughout the world where we're
5:53
becoming very very nationalistic
5:56
anti-global but as living your life as a
5:59
global citizen you believe patriotism is
6:01
fine you believe you're patriotic
6:03
towards your own country but that
6:05
doesn't mean that you it's at the
6:07
expense of truth inclusion or inter or
6:11
international cooperation you believe
6:13
that you will that nationalism is
6:15
important but you also don't believe in
6:17
extremism you invest in solutions not
6:20
just sympathy you don't just watch
6:23
disasters unfold you donate you organize
6:26
you build you care about long-term
6:28
impact not just quick fixes
6:31
you understand privilege and use it
6:32
wisely i think this is also one of the
6:34
key ones especially for those of us that
6:37
have come from privileged societies or
6:39
privileged places that you understand
6:41
that privilege you know is important but
6:44
you use it wisely too if you have access
6:46
to travel tech education wealth you
6:49
recognize it and you use it to amplify
6:51
others not just elevate yourself there's
6:55
many ways that you can start now to
6:56
start thinking like a global citizen and
6:59
here's a few things that you can do even
7:01
if you can't travel you can read
7:03
international news you know at least
7:05
weekly support global causes and
7:07
verified NOS's listen to podcasts from
7:10
outside your culture a podcast such as
7:13
this one is is such an example try food
7:16
from regions you don't know much about
7:17
and try to learn and explore about those
7:19
foods follow educators artists and
7:21
leaders from other countries teach your
7:24
kids or others about parts of the world
7:27
learn one phrase in a new language every
7:29
month understand immigration not just
7:32
policy but as people's lives global
7:35
citizen is not just a trend it becomes
7:36
really a lifelong practice and it
7:39
becomes something that you should do
7:41
throughout your life so if you've been
7:43
listening with the Dusty Roads podcast
7:45
you realize that we are great advocates
7:46
for living life as a global citizen and
7:49
we've said many times that you don't
7:51
really have to travel you you know you
7:53
could just be someone who cares about
7:54
the world someone who wants to learn
7:58
about the world and someone who wants to
8:00
learn about other lives other cultures
8:03
and other places and that's what it
8:05
really means to live your life as a
8:07
global citizen i've written a a blog on
8:10
this entitled you know what does it mean
8:12
to be a global citizen today and in
8:14
there's some ideas there's some
8:15
frequently asked questions there's some
8:17
other things like that that you can use
8:19
to be able to see what does it really
8:21
mean to be a global citizen today and
8:24
how you can take these steps in your
8:26
life to become a global citizen i
8:28
believe in today's world in this world
8:30
where we live in where you know things
8:32
are becoming more like people are
8:33
becoming more nationalistic or they're
8:35
they're they're they're saying that they
8:37
they want to block the world out or not
8:39
have the world around that it's more
8:41
important than ever that those of us who
8:43
believe in this that we stand up for
8:45
this we stand up to live our lives as a
8:48
global citizen so we hope that you'll
8:49
subscribe that you'll join with us and
8:52
that you'll be part of this community
8:54
where it's not just about learning about
8:56
travel and the world and other things
8:58
but it's also really about learning how
9:01
to live your life as a global citizen
