There has been some controversy lately as to whether or not Google, particularly Google search engines, falls under the rules of being a social media company.
Google is not a social media platform but a technology company. Most people know Google as a search engine; even today, Google is the number one search engine worldwide. But besides Google Search, the company offers many other types of services, such as Google Drive, Gmail, YouTube, Google Translate, and Google Maps, to name a few.

Google Is A Technology Company, Not A Social Media Platform
Google is a search engine and technology company, not a social media platform. Google has many different services but is probably best known for its search engines.
Google’s search engine is the most popular in the world. Google will work to try to understand what you were trying to search for on the web (your search intent) and then go through billions of pages to find you the answer you want.
Google has become so proficient that it remains the top search engine worldwide.
Google Search Is World’s No. 1 Search Engine
Google remains the search engine of choice for most of the world. It is estimated that over 50% of the world’s population uses Google as their search engine.
Here are some of the reasons why Google continues to be such a popular search engine:
Google Gives Relevant Results
Google gives the user relevant results. Google is constantly refining its algorithms and program to understand the user’s intent.
Over the years, Google has improved with this as they have worked to understand the user’s intent and the content written to give the user the best and most relevant results possible.
Google Is a Trusted Brand
Most people trust Google, which is seen by the number of people actively using it as their primary or only search engine. People trust Google and that Google Search will give them the search results that they need.
The Google Search Engine Is Fast
The Google search engine results are speedy. Google continues to work at getting faster and faster. You no longer need to wait for the research results, but they usually come quickly.
Google Has Many Sites In Their Index
As Google is a popular search engine, they have many sites in its index. I know that most bloggers like myself will actively tell Google when a blog is published so that Google can put it on their index.
Google Is A Great Platform
Google is a great platform. They are constantly working to improve their tools, not just for their search engines but for all their other services.
Google Is More Than A Search Engine
One of the great things about the Google brand is that Google is much more than a Search Engine. Being a search engine is an integral part of Google, but Google also offers a lot of other things – many of them completely free.
Google has so many products they are almost too numerous to list. And the best part of it is that Google is constantly adding to its products.
Google products are divided up into several categories including:
- Search Tools – The search tools are what Google is known for and is one of the main reasons that people use Google. Even with the search tools, Google has redefined the tools for things such as Google Images, Google Arts & Culture, and even Google Scholar. Interestingly, the famous video hosting platform that Google owns, YouTube, is also listed as a search tool.
- Advertising Services – One of the primary ways that Google makes money is with ads. They have several services under this, including Google Ad Sense and Google Tag Manager.
- Communication And Publishing Tools – Google has various communication and publishing tools, including Blogger, Gmail, Google Chat, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Google Translate.
- Maps – Related Products – Google has many maps-related products, including Google Maps, Google Moon, Google Street View, and even Google Sky.
- Statistical Tools – Google gives various statistical tools, such as Google Trends, Google Analytics, and Google Surveys.
- Business-Oriented Products – In this category, one of their most popular business-oriented tools is Google Workspace.
- Developer And Security Tools – Google has a host of developer and security tools for people who are designing and creating websites. Some of them I use include Google Page Speed, Google Developers, and ReCAPTCHA.
- Operating Systems – Google also has an operating system known as Android. Chrome OS is also part of their operating system.
- Desktop Applications – Google has a desktop application that includes Google Chrome: Google Toolbar and a host of Google applications for other languages.
- Mobile Applications – Mobile applications are also critical to Google, including Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Wallet, and Google Music.
- Hardware – Google also has some specialized hardware, which includes Nexus and Galaxy, to name a few.
- Services – Google also offers other services, including Google Crisis Response, a public project that helps with disasters and emergencies.
When you look at this list, you can see that Google has a pervasive operation. There is nowhere that they list themselves as having any social media platforms, but most are search or technology-related. In fact, at one time, they started Google +, which was more of a social media platform but has since closed it down.
Google took itself out of social media and instead focused on other areas. Google owns YouTube, but they consider that part of their search engine divisions.

The Influence of Google on Websites: A Critical Perspective
Google’s dominance as a search engine extends far beyond its basic functionality. In my experience, and as echoed by numerous other bloggers, Google’s updates can drastically impact website traffic, effectively determining the success or failure of a site.
This power is not to be underestimated; Google’s algorithm changes or policy updates can swiftly alter a company’s trajectory. Therefore, while Google is fundamentally a search engine, its significant influence on digital landscapes makes it a pivotal player in the fate of online enterprises.
